Will Ashley be the one that Mia falls for, or will she be destined to give Mia nothing but false promises, like everyone who has come before her? ---------------------------------------------------------- EXCERPT FROM BOOK Ashley grabbed her hand and led her to the center of the dance floor. They started in on a quick number: “Rio” by Duran Duran. Mia was a big fan of the song, and she followed Ashley’s lead on the dancing. From there, there was a Talking Heads song, then Depeche Mode, and finally, Mia’s absolute favorite, some Tears for Fears. Four songs in, both women were sweating profusely and getting extremely touchy-feely. “I think it might be time for us to re-hydrate,” said Mia, in a rare moment of taking charge at the situation. “Look at you!” said Ashley, pleasantly surprised. “I couldn’t agree more.” They headed to the bar, where Ashley once again caught the bartender’s attention, and had the drinks over promptly. “Well well well!!” someone said loudly behind Ashley, pounding her on the back with each ‘Well’. Ashley and Mia turned around to see a tall, slender woman with dark hair, in her early 20s, standing there with her mouth slightly agape, and seemingly fairly inebriated. “Uh…hi Courtney,” Ashley said, her mood instantly doing a 180. “Mia, this is my, uh…” “Let me finish that thought for you,” Courtney said, slurring slightly and turning to Mia. “I’m her ex-girlfriend.” Mia remained silent for a moment and then nodded. “I see,” she said. “Yes, emphasis on the ‘ex’ aspect of it, because we’ve been done for several months now,” said Ashley. Mia thought back to the conversation they’d had at dinner. Ashley had mentioned she had gotten out of a serious relationship a few months prior. Now, she presumed that this must have been the woman. She was attractive, to be sure. Mia could imagine that when the two of them had been doing well, it had been a beautiful relationship. But even just this taste of it seemed too volatile for its own good. “What the hell are you doing here?” Courtney asked Ashley. “In case you weren’t aware, this is the United States of America, Miss, and it is a free country,” Ashley replied sarcastically. “Yeah yeah,” Courtney said. “Well, who’s this cute little thing?” She turned and focused her attention on Mia. “This, right here,” said Ashley, proudly, “Is Mia Hawkins. Remember that name, Courtney, because she’s about to put our band on the map.” “Oh yeah?” said Courtney. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” “Go to hell, kid,” Ashley said, and then turned to Mia, embarrassed, as if she had read Mia’s mind earlier when she’d wondered if ‘kid’ was a nickname reserved for her.
